This one is hard to make happen because who really gets excited about dusting the fans or cleaning the vent screens? However, deeper cleaning can become a rewarding part of our homemaking, as we move away from just maintenance and start making progress to a clean and well organized home with as little as 10 minutes a day or 1 hour total a week. Your house will be easier to maintain and you will likely begin to notice more time and even a greater sense of calm. I’m excited to share my deep cleaning & decluttering rhythm with a large family in hopes it helps you experience these benefits, as well!

Why deep clean or declutter?

I no longer have to do those seasonal big cleaning sprees. I can now spend those weekends at the beginning of each season enjoying some fun outing with my family! My goal with this rhythm is to “keep up” instead of “catch up”. This makes my daily and weekly cleaning much more doable and makes sure I get to even those harder tasks I might otherwise forget. Maintaining our home helps it to run more efficiently, find things faster, and even helps things last longer!

What if I miss a day or area?

Routines and systems are not meant to be your master, but to serve YOU. If you have put off trying a new cleaning system or routine because you know you won’t be able to keep it perfectly- that’s not the point. The objective is to make these decisions ahead of time so you won’t waste your time with needless decision fatigue, endless cleaning or procrastination. It really is freeing to have the cleaning in its place. I don’t worry about it or have to think about it too much if I take a day off. I just start where I currently am in my rhythm and keep going because I know I will circle back around to that area next month.

If deep cleaning and decluttering are things you loathe doing, the key I’ve found is to make the tasks bite-sized and doable in 15 minutes or less. Sure, you won’t organize an entire room or an overwhelming closet in that time, but you can do a cupboard, a shelf, under a bed etc. in that time. Once you see SOME semblance of progress it can be so motivating to keep going!

The first step: Designate zones in your home

I designate 1 zone to focus on per week of the month. My 5th zone is for when I have lap over weeks. I split zones 5 and 1. I make zone 5 my bonus rooms that don’t require as much attention. If that just made your eyes cross, please don’t leave yet! All that means is that I break my home up and stick to a certain area for 1 week. This ensures I get through my whole house each month, doing at least a little to make some forward momentum with deep cleaning or decluttering.

How I group rooms in my home into zones

I group the rooms that are close to each other or used at similar frequencies. For example, kitchen & dining, or exterior rooms that are used less frequently like office and guest rooms. This is also helpful for the children. They have their own zones to maintain and clean weekly, as well. It is their zone of responsibility.

Here’s how I break up the zones in my house by locality and use:

Front porch, living room, hallway

Kitchen, dining room, pantry

Bedrooms

Bathrooms

Bonus rooms: office, laundry room, garage, storage rooms

I usually spend 10-15 extra minutes each day (for 4-5 days a week, which amounts to about an hour a week) in that zone doing some deeper cleaning tasks that relate to my weekly cleaning You can break this up several ways. For example:

Do extra tasks that pertain to your weekly cleaning tasks each day

Set a timer and just go for it doing whatever you can on the days you have more time or energy

Start with the biggest pain point or the easiest job- whichever appeals more!

Do a longer chunck on the weekend

Bonus tip: Larger or more cluttered rooms should be their own zones. Try to keep each zone from being too overwhelming of a size to manage. Don’t forget to include your porch, garage or other outdoor areas you want to work on– or delegate them to a child or spouse.

Deep cleaning: dusting & wiping

The key to developing this as a habit was to not make it so complicated, you don’t have to do it perfectly with a fine tooth comb. Just do a bit real quick! I like to literally race to see not HOW detailed I can be but how MUCH I can do! Quantity over quality over here. This adds up real quick though. If you’re doing this every month, you’ll notice a huge difference in how clean your home stays! Goodbye dreaded spring cleaning!

KEEP IN MIND- YOU WON’T DO ALL OF THESE EACH MONTH! Work in your week’s zone and just pick one or a few or set a timer.

Dusting & wiping tips and tricks

Wash your dryer lint vent under hot water (soap can build up that blocks it that you can’t see!)

Tie a damp flour sack towel onto your broom and run it over your baseboards

Use a vacuum attachment to “dust” the hard to reach nooks

Race around for 5 minutes like crazy reaching whatever you can with an extended duster

Remove all vent covers in the area and throw them in the sink with hot water and some dawn, rinse and replace

Use a flat surface mop to clean your walls

Use a disposable disinfecting wipe to quickly go over all of your light switches and handles

Place a pillowcase over your ceiling fan blades to trap the dust inside while you wipe down

Run an empty load with hot water and vinegar or bleach to deep clean your washing machine

Run an empty load in your dishwasher with descaler on the heavy duty cycle

Empty one area of your fridge or freezer, vacuum and wipe down throughly

Bonus tip: Buy a cleaning spray and dishcloths you enjoy using. A pleasant smell can trigger positive emotions around cleaning. I love the geranium Mrs. Meyers concentrate. It makes 32 spray bottles!

Deep cleaning: glass cleaning & polishing

I like to take an extra 10 minutes on the day I’m already doing glass cleaning to also do polishing in my zone for that week. I just set the timer and work through a master list, or what I can see right in front of me that needs to be done. This saves me time from getting cleaning products out on a separate day, but also keeps me from getting carried away doing too much until I’m tired. I just do a bit each week and it makes alot of progress without me dreading it or getting overwhelmed and too tired.

If we keep our daily tidying routines going, and maintain a weekly floor cleaning of just the walking areas in the main rooms, then monthly cleaning shouldn’t be a huge burden. I use this time to clean upholstery that needs it as I have my vacuum out anyways. On my sheet laundering day I check whatever extras need to be washed in that week’s zone– slipcovers, curtains, pillow covers. Note- I just CHECK. That doesn’t mean I actually wash those things every week, I just check for what is visibly dirty or stained and throw it in with the sheets.

Make it more fun by listening to your favorite music or audiobook, and a reward when you finish. You CAN do this even with limited energy and time. Just do something!

Declutter and beautify

I define organizing as removing unneeded items to find a better fit for the needed items in a space. This is more commonly referred to as decluttering. But the term “decluttering” can have negative connotations because it can often be associated with minimalism and the dreaded decision making about what to keep and what to get rid of.

However, if we just keep moving around the same amount of inventory, we really won’t make much progress to a more orderly home. Simplify your “organizing” to just getting rid of the unnecessary and rearranging what’s needed. That’s it. You don’t have to purge everything!

Anytime something feels unorganized or cluttered, it is usually because there are too many items in that designated space. More often than not, there is literal trash in there that will need to be tossed, if nothing else. Begin by tossing what’s expired, empty, broken or trash, then rearrange things for a better fit. Then next time you circle back around, if the area feels disorderly again, try to find a better solution to make the items easier to find and access.

I also love to spend a little bit of time beautifying something in the zone, as well. It’s a great morale boost! Sometimes it’s just making a list of wanted items to budget for, or creating a board on Pinterest for that space. Other times its rearranging or hanging new art. But even small steps accumulate to big impact over time.

Bonus tip: When beginning to organize an area begin at the macro level, i.e. think of grouping large categories together. Then you can refine down from there if you want to later.

I’m excited to share with you the plan that has helped me accomplish my weekly cleaning with our nine children through many different seasons and energy levels. Here is my 15 minute weekly cleaning rhythm. This plan is flexible but still gives you a solid framework to do in a day or over the course of a week.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://alegacyindays.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/15-minute-weekly-cleaning-683x1024.png" alt="15 minute weekly cleaning rhythm pin showing detailed images of dusting mopping wipe and cleaning

Usually when we begin a new cleaning routine it is because we are feeling behind. Our first round of cleaning reveals all of the areas we’ve been neglecting and it’s easy to get carried away and even get lost in reorganizing and detail cleaning. Before we know it, we’re exhausted and ready to throw in the towel on the whole idea. Then we let a lot of time pass until we try again and lo and behold it’s still as dirty as last time. Rinse and repeat. Sound familiar? I’ve been there, too!
The solution is to ONLY do a small bit of maintenance cleaning regularly and leave the deeper cleaning and declutterring to a monthly task.
Follow along as I break down my weekly cleaning tasks to just the essentials that take less than 15 min. or less EACH! I’m sharing tips for when I’ve had low energy and busy seasons such as pregnancy and postpartum, as well.

See my post on the 5 daily tasks for a tidy home here

Day 1 or step 1: Dust and wipe surfaces

The first thing I do is dust and wipe surfaces. If I am doing my cleaning all in one day, or spread out over the week, I still do this first. This ensure I don’t spread dust around after I’ve cleaned the floors. I usually do this task after I’ve tidied, to save time not moving things around as I go.

If you are just beginning:

Begin with the main rooms or most impactful areas first. The key here is to not get carried away with deep cleaning. This is not time to move everything off the surface and polish the wood furniture. Just wipe the exposed flat surfaces with a dusting spray and microfiber cloth, and dust the visible decor items with a duster. Hard to reach spaces and nooks and crannies can be saved for a monthly or seasonal tasks.

Steps:

Carry your supplies with you

Work your way around the room

Dust ceiling to floor

Use an extendable duster like this one

Day 2 or step 2: Glass clean

If you prefer to group your cleaning tasks, it’s still better to clean all glass after you’ve dusted and wiped as your dusting spray can leave a residue on glass surfaces. You can decide which rooms are important to do this in regularly. Rooms used less often can be done monthly or seasonally.

Cleaning the glass is one of my favorite cleaning tasks. I think it’s so satisfying. I only clean the inside of windows and glass doors if they get dirty regularly. Otherwise, I just clean glass surfaces and obviously dirty glass areas. The rest I do on a seasonal rotation. I also clean the TV and computer screens this day.
Remember to keep it simple. If the task seems too easy and insignificant, great! You’ll be more likely to succeed in regularly maintaining it then. That will leave you more time and energy for important deeper cleaning and decluttering while still being able to keep up an easily maintained home.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1920" height="2560" src="https://alegacyindays.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/IMG_5961-2-scaled.jpg" alt="powder bath makeover cleaning the bathroom

If you follow your daily maintenance wipe down fairly regularly, cleaning the bathrooms shouldn’t take more than 5-10 min. each bathroom.
I prefer to empty all of our trash bins while I’m already emptying our bathrooms’. Bonus is that it’s trash day the day we clean our bathrooms.
We keep at least one trash container in every bathroom so it doesn’t accumulate too fast. Kitchen gets emptied daily, of course.

This is weekly maintenance cleaning so, once again, don’t get carried away doing deep cleaning or scrubbing grout. I don’t even move things and wipe under them. I save that for monthly cleaning. This is just a quick clean to keep it maintained to a manageable level. I set the timer and quickly run through these:

Clean the mirror (sometimes I do a quick dust- or not)

Wipe the counters and cabinet doors (only where I can see toothpaste or something)

Scrub the sink & faucet

Thorough toilet clean

Vacuume and quick mop floors

Empty all trash bins.

Each week rotate: spray and wipe down a shower or tub

Day 4 or step 4: Kitchen focus

This is the area that is the easiest to get carried away in because it can get so dirty so quickly! But doing this weekly clean and tidy can keep it from becoming an overwhelming job. But remember, this is to keep up and not “catch up” so I don’t get carried away doing monthly tasks like: decluttering, cleaning underneath things or appliances, those can be done monthly. Instead I focus on the following list:

Tidy fridge and toss old food (quick wipe of shelves if there is an obvious spill)

Quick tidy and sweep pantry

Wipe cabinet faces and thoroughly clean around surfaces on counters

Wipe down trash can

Clean and polish sink

Sweep & quick mop floors

Bonus tip: For seasons of low energy or limited time, I just make sure I get the fridge tidied and old food culled. This has the most positive impact on my week.

Day 5 or step 5: Clean main room floors

I know this is the one I used to procrastinate on the most! Because I used to try to clean all my floors in one day. However, when we moved into our current 4,000 sq. ft home, I could no longer keep that up! Now I focus only on the main rooms weekly, and I rotate through the exterior rooms monthly. The kids are in charge of their own rooms weekly. If cleaning your floors is something you dread, try biting off a smaller chunk at a time and stay focused to the most impactful areas.

I don’t use a fancy cleaner for my floors, just my favorite all purpose concentrate to clean my floors because I have laminate flooring in my main rooms.

This is the easiest chore I can get my kids to help with. Especially since I’ve purchased a lighter cordless vacuum and an easy to use mop. I use this as an incentive chore or a pay chore. Most are more than willing to help out, and my older kids do this regularly enough without being asked because it’s fun to use the vacuum and mop we have. Sometimes all we need is a new tool for the job to get motivated!

Bonus tip: For seasons of low energy and limited time just vacuume the main rooms and mop the kitchen/dining. Better yet, have your kids help! Most kids don’t mind mopping and vacuuming so much.

With 10 of us at home and 7 boys, I could easily spend all day cleaning if I let the messes get to me. But, with this simple routine I can set it and forget and truly enjoy my home and my children. Here are 5 daily tasks for a tidy home.

Do you hate cleaning or get overwhelmed by the enormity of the tasks? If you strip down to these five daily tasks, cleaning will be quicker, easier and much less stressful. You can spend more time living in and enjoying your home. Subscribe for updates, as I’ll be sharing my weekly and monthly and seasonal cleaning routines next!

The first daily task for a tidy home: Make the bed

This one small act seems unimportant, but it is the feeling of order and productivity it lends to your day that makes it important. This might feel like a meaningless task, but how do you feel when you walk into your room and see the bed made? Good? How do you feel when you see it unmade? See?!

It DOES make a difference.

Starting your day with your bed made not only keeps you from getting back in it , but begins the day with a sense of order and momentum. It is a way of affirming to yourself every time you walk in your room that you are an orderly, productive and tidy person. This helps you walk in light of that the rest of the day. Don’t discount it! But also, don’t expect perfection when embarking on new habits. Let go of perfection and aim to not have more than 2 days go by with your bed unmade. It’s a rhythm not a checklist. Consistency > perfection= progress

Bonus tip: My husband and I have a rule: last one out of bed makes it! Did you know you can make your bed while you’re still in it? Seriously! Just lay in bed, fluff up the covers, smooth the sheets with your legs. Next, grab the pillows close to you and fluff them, then lay down and sliiide out from under the sheets. You’re almost done! Tuck in what’s needed and tighten it all up and put your pillows on! You’ve just accomplished an impactful task before even getting out of bed!

Try it? Leave me a comment below!

Second thing I do daily for a tidy home: Tidy the kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home. I don’t know about you, but I find it difficult to be motivated to do anything else when the kitchen is a mess. Conversely, when it is clean, I am usually more excited to get in there and cook for the next meal. If you clean it first thing after breakfast, you’ll set your day up for more efficient work and clarity of mind. Plus you won’t have the crumbs finding their way into other areas of the house and creating more messes.

One thing was keeping me from making this a habit. I used to get carried away cleaning it. I would start organizing drawers and scrubbing corners and before I knew it, I was exhausted and dreading the next kitchen cleannup.

The key to developing it as a habit was to not make it so complicated, so that I could enjoy it instead of loathing it. I have one day a week I focus on more detailed cleaning and the rest of the time is to just prep it for the next use.

For daily maintenance I stick to the following:

(the children help accomplish these after each meal)

clear & wipe counters

unload/load dishes, rinse out sink

sweep the floors

That’s it! No wiping down appliances (unless there’s an obvious spill or something) No mopping, no cleaning cracks and crevices or organizing cupboards! Save those for another day.

Our goal shouldn’t be always having a clean kitchen. Kitchens are for using! If you want to make it a habit you can stick to, try not over cleaning your kitchen, and instead just focus on resetting it for the next meal.

Bonus tip: Buy a cleaning spray and dishcloths you enjoy using. A pleasant smell can trigger positive emotions around cleaning. I love the geranium Mrs. Meyers concentrate. It makes 32 spray bottles!

3. The third daily task for a tidy home: 1 load of laundry

See one load (for me, it’s usually two) all the way through to completion each day, and you’ll rarely have a day you have to “catch up” on the laundry.

Wash, dry, fold & put away.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1280" height="1920" src="https://alegacyindays.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/FF03A9D2-20F5-41A6-BCFA-54708F8D00B4.jpeg" alt="a basket of clothing in a seagrass basket waiting to be folded to maintain a daily cleaning routine

Do you struggle to remember to switch your loads? Try to tie it to something else you always do. For me, I check the laundry before or after mealtimes.

I prefer to fold right away (when I’m home), and we put it away when we tidy our rooms.

Do you do a load a day or a big pile when clean clothes are gone?

I fold and put away the same day because otherwise kids dig through the clean clothes and they end up on the floor and back in the hamper before being worn! Also, because I hate ironing and de-wrinkling, and the sooner I fold the clothes, the less wrinkled they are. If I don’t, my kids can’t seem to get themselves dressed and I’m the one left scrambling trying to find them something decent to wear.

Bonus tip: try dumping it out on your bed or the couch and telling yourself you can’t watch your show until it’s folded or while you fold!

Try it and tell me if it helps!

Which are you? Folder or nonfolder?

4. The fourth daily task for a tidy home: Tidy the Main Room

When we have littles it can feel like our homes are never clean. That’s ok! Our homes are meant to be the set we live our lives in, not museum or design curations.

Instead of seeing a tidy room as the goal, try setting designated times for picking up to reset the stage for the next scene of your life. This can help you enjoy your space better, but still not be as overwhelmed by the mess.

We pickup once in the morning, once after lunch (occasionally) and before Daddy comes home from work. Find a rhythm that fits in your routine. It helps to tie it to a time you already have a routine established, like meals or bedtimes etc.

With 9 kids and 7 boys, I was constantly caught in the cycle of feeling defeated by the mess. I would get overwhelmed enough to finally clean up, then get caught up in decluttering and cleaning, leading to exhaustion so I would put it off again- rinse and repeat.

Do you find yourself doing either of these? Avoid it until it overwhelms you, or accidentally getting lost in cleaning and decluttering? It’s a totally understandable place to be in when you are actually LIVING in your home or have little kids. However, what got me out of that crazy cycle was finding a good rhythm of tidying up. We do it at set moments during the day. No cleaning, no declutterring, just putting everything back in its place. This helps me not feel exhausted so I can repeat it again without the memory of being wiped! I have other times set to clean and declutter, but daily tidying isn’t for that. Tidying should be to reset the rooms FOR use again.

Cleaning and decluttering are in my weekly and monthly routines (stayed tuned for a follow up post on those) so I know I’ll get to those tasks later and our home stays more manageable.

When we can find a rhythm of tidying that works for us, we can better use and enjoy our homes.

Bonus tip: Keep a basket nearby while you pick up to collect things that belong in other rooms and a trash bag to collect trash as you go. This will keep you focused on the room you are in and not get distracted running to other rooms to deliver things or throw away trash.

5. My final daily task for a tidy home: Wipe the bathrooms

Maintaining your bathrooms daily takes only a minute or two and is an easy way to cut your weekly bathroom cleaning time down exponentially and then you don’t have to worry if company drops by and needs to use it!

Just wipe the mirrors, counters & sink and do a quick swish in the toilet with the toilet brush. WIth seven boys and 4 bathrooms, we all pitch in for this task, but it sure goes a long way to keep it from getting really nasty.

Do you hate cleaning the bathroom? Who doesn’t? But this tip has taken my weekly cleaning down to 5-10 minutes per bathroom tops! You might need to do a deep clean to get it to this easy maintenance mode but it’s worth it! Of course we’ll miss some days, but aiming for daily means it gets done regularly and your weekly cleaning will be so much easier.

Bonus tip: Make it easy to do by keeping a container of cleaning wipes in each bathroom that can also be used on the mirror. Make it easy to remember by doing this for each bathroom after you use it the first time each day.

I’ve always enjoyed doing laundry. Something about the clean smell and seeing freshly folded piles is satisfying. However, the joy in the process quickly fades when after doing laundry every day I still wind up with set stains, overflowing hampers, lack of clean clothes, and dirtly clothes piles everywhere! Whether you enjoy laundry like I do, or not, you are likely here to find a routine that will help limit your laundry woes. That’s why I’m glad to share our simplified large family laundry routine with you today! I have tried different systems and the current one has made laundry so much easier to maintain. My hampers aren’t overflowing, my laundry room stays mostly in order, and the only thing overflowing on a given day is the clean laundry baskets!

Having a routine can be the make-it-or-break-it to make something go from disaster to order. My routine described below, can work for any size family. I have also included a print you can easily reference.

(The comedy is not lost on me that today, as I write this, I am cleaning up half a jug of laundry soap that fell off the washer and spilled all over the laundry floor downstairs! HAHAHAH)

The basics to our simplified large family laundry routine

Collect all the dirty clothes in the evenings

Rotate loads every day after mealtimes as needed (except Sundays)

Fold, only the essentials, all at once

There are 11 of us needing laundry done, but our 4 youngest have the most laundry and most dirty laundry by far! So, if you just have littles and feel overwhelmed, rightly so! It is alot! hehe.

We have 4 boys that share 2 rooms downstairs where we also have a second washer and dryer set. They alternate doing their own laundry by room, and each boy has their own hamper. Our oldest daughter does her own laundry around the laundry I am doing over the weekend . This means I am responsible for 6 persons laundry- mine and my husband’s, our baby girl’s, and the 3 little boys’. I add in the towels and sheets on particular days.

Some systems I have tried before

I have tried all kinds of methods. Maybe you have tried different methods, too, but they weren’t working for you either. Perhaps that’s why you’re here today. Everyone has their preferences, but finding what works for YOU is the most important part of establishing a good routine. I’ve even folded Kon Mari style, but soon realized that work was all undone in1 day with little kids rummaging for a favorite shirt.

Doing it all over 2 days

Assigning a day of the week per person or room

Collecting it all and doing it daily

The later is the method I am using now. I’ve been doing laundry everyday since our family size grew to about 6 of us, but it was a different method. Each day I would wash by room or category. The trouble I was that we still had a week to go between those washes. I was doing laundry everyday, but we still would run out of clean clothes. The other problem was the stains on the clothes would set after sitting there a week.

The benefits to my current simplified routine

There is rarely an overflowing hamper in a bedroom now and the dirty clothes are mostly contained to the laundry room, and washed sooner.

Stains don’t set as easily, anymore. I noticed the wash comes clean without much needed pretreating because they’re washed more frequently.

We can keep a more minimal wardrobe as the clothes are washed more often.

Our littles guys can find something clean to put on from the fresh laundry basket easily if needed, as well.

My simplified large family laundry routine:

Keep a hamper in each room

Collect dirty clothes each evening

Sort clothes into 3 large hampers

Rotate wash after mealtimes

Sort into baskets by room or child

Fold only the essentials once a day

Have kids put away their own during a routine time

1. Keep a hamper in each room

This makes it easy to keep the dirty clothes off the floor and ready to be collected. Our older boys that share have their own dirty clothes hampers to make it easier to keep track of their own clothes they wash themselves, as well. I prefer to use these large hampers because they are durable, lightweight, and large.

2. Collect dirty clothes each evening

I prefer to collect in the evenings to see sure we get the clothes from that da, and because I’m usually home to do it and not rushing out somewhere. If you want to develop a maintainable routine, find a time that works for you that you can be consistent in. A tip- pin it to something you already do, like a mealtime or when you get home etc.

3. Sort clothes into 3 large hampers

These large hampers are the ones I use in my laundry room. I sort by lights, darks, and heavy or soiled items. I don’t get picky about weights and colors and have not had a problem. If I think some whites need a refresh, I’ll pull them out of the lights basket and soak separately in oxi clean. When the hamper is full to the top, I know I have a full load ready to go in!

4. Rotate wash after mealtimes as needed

Mornings are busy enough, so just needing to remember to throw a ready load in after breakfast and switch what’s in the wash is simple enough. I have a habit of it now, so laundry doesn’t sit more than a day. If you tie it to something that is already a habit it will become a habit in itself, too.

5. Sort into baskets by room or child

Our 3 little guys have their own small laundry baskets, so when I sit down to fold, I just sort their laundry into their own baskets. I don’t fold any of their clothes. I help them fold on a morning we have more time, or I just let them put them in the proper drawer during our morning routine when their baskets get full. This makes it easy for them to find clean clothes in between without rummaging through folded clothes. Our little girl’s dresser is in our room so I include her clothes with my husband’s and mine.

6. Fold only the essentials once a day

I collect the clean laundry out of the drawer into a large basket or two, and batch fold only once a day. My preference is to do it in the evenings either while my hubby reads to us, or we watch a show. I don’t fold undies or jammies, unless I get carried away watching a great show- like our current favorite, The Chosen!

7. Have kids put away their own during a routine time

Last, but certainly not lease, we have even our younger kids help as much as they can fold and put away their own clothes. As I mentioned before, I don’t have them fold unless I have time to sit with them and give them a folding lesson, so that they can learn. They have minimal wardrobes so their drawer aren’t stuffed. As long as we can find what we need, I don’t care.

I love these wool dryer balls to fluff and soften our clothes and cut dry time. Sprinkling on a few essential oil drops keeps them smelling lovely, too.

Tide Free and Gentle and Shout keep the stain setting to a minimum. I use cornstarch on a grease stain, then dawn detergent, and I save shout for for those really stubborn grease stains because it is a heavy chemical, but works!

Pour boiling water over fruit stains and watch them vanish- really!

Soaking in baking soda or borax in a tub before washing for heavily soiled items works wonders.

I wash all my hand washables or things I don’t want to dry in the dryer in delicates bags. I just wash on cold with my normal load and pull out to hang dry. I even put sweaters I want to hang up in a large delicates bag so I don’t accidentally put it in the dryer.

I buy the same socks for our boys so I don’t have to match individual sock pairs. If one gets a hole it can be matched to another that did. We rotate white and black ankles for spring and summer and taller boot socks for fall and winter. The ones I like here, have a different color per size which is all I have to look for. Easy peasy.

Use my no iron hack- explained in this video!

Thanks so much for joining me again here in my little corner, friend! I hope some of these ideas can help you gain solutions that create more time to spend enjoying your family!

Mornings can be stressful! Amidst the craziness of a full house with seven boys, it is so tempting to rush through our mornings and get on with what we “need to get done”. So today, I’m sharing our homeschool morning routine, one with a focus on a slower togetherness to center our day around fellowship and God’s Word.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://alegacyindays.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/IMG_3380-683x1024.jpg" alt="Boys cuddling on couch together reading a book

The moments we are given are precious, but that doesn’t mean they always feel that way, in fact, they rarely do. It is often that someone’s attitude needs to be corrected or we have to start where we left off multiple times from the same spot, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t making progress. Every day spent in small moments of intentionality in your homeschool morning routine will bear fruit. The more and more you incorporate the elements to your morning that you long for, the more it will feel natural and you will meet with less resistance from your kids and even yourself.

The next day starts the night before

My desire is to have a slower pace to our mornings and time for togetherness before we have to get to our to do list. A little extra preparation the night before goes a long way towards not feeling rushed the next morning. Some evenings I prep a baked good or another dish I can quickly bake- like a quiche or some muffin batter. We make sure the kitchen is cleaned, do a quick tidy, and sort out a load of laundry to put in in the morning before tucking in for the night. Having an evening routine that helps me sleep better and wake feeling ready for another day is so helpful for setting our mornings off on the right foot.

Using Time blocks for more flexibility

We schedule our day in what is commonly referred to as time blocks. We aim to accomplish certain tasks within a set timeframe and leave what isn’t done in that block until another day and move on to the next block. I stick to the priorities so if we have extra time we can do a little more, but at least we are getting to the most important things in that block. These blocks of time usually are plenty to get done what we need to and still be able to maintain this schedule. Each day making progress forward is the goal.

Progress is the goal, not perfection.

I used to try to schedule our days for each item on our schedule. But it would leave me feeling panicky and behind if we couldn’t fit in what we needed to get done. I would push each undone item into the next time block and constantly felt behind. Now, I have made our blocks with plenty of margin to get done what we need. If there is an unexpected interruption or delay, we just move to the next block and drop what’s not finished as needed.

No day is ever “perfect” and that’s precisely why the schedule is so helpful for me. I don’t have to think about what I should do next when something is off rhythm or try to “catch up”. We just keep plugging forward! By the end of a week we have generally balanced out anyways. The things maybe dropped earlier in the week have a chance for recovery and I don’t stress it if not. Progress is the goal, not perfection.

How our homeschool morning routine begins

6-7:30

I love the slow quiet of morning before the kids all wake up. I try to get up before they do so I can calm and quiet my soul before I am taken up with directing the show. Even after a rough night’s sleep, waking up early enough to be able to orient my heart to the Lord’s will for my day renews me for another full day more than an extra bit of sleep will. I typically get up at least 30 min to an hour before I wake the kids up. I aim to at least have enough time to get ready and read my Bible. If I’ve had enough sleep, I will try to wake up even earlier to sneak in a quick workout or write.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="652" height="1024" src="https://alegacyindays.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/588DA9A2-5FE4-4734-8B13-790D938F0054-652x1024.jpg" alt="Natalie from a legacy in days reading a bible and drinking coffee for her morning routine.

Waking up early enough to be able to orient my heart to the Lord’s will for my day and quietly listening to His word, renews me for another full day more than an extra bit of sleep will.

My older kids get up earlier, as needed, to begin their school. Our younger children like to sleep in, so we don’t have a household of kiddos up at the crack of dawn, like I know a lot of families do. Our struggle is more in getting the kids UP! In this block I set out any breakfast things, start tea and coffee or do a quick prep (preheat oven) right before I wake up the children that aren’t awake yet. I try to wake us up earlier than we would want to so that we can have TIME to enjoy the morning together.

Our homeschool morning worship routine

7:30-8:30

I turn on their lights and cheerfully rouse them, but then I go out and let them wake up. Eventually they make their way out to snuggle on the couch by the fire. They usually chat with me, while having tea or coffee. I love this slower moment with snuggles and time for a chat with my kids before the pace picks up for the day.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://alegacyindays.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/IMG_3374-1024x683.jpg" alt="Boy sitting on couch in the morning snuggling for family discipleship.

Then we begin morning worship. Even though it is never easy or peaceful, and can feel tempting to skip it, this is the most important part of our morning routine. At some point in here the baby wakes up and I feed her or she joins in on the readings.

Even though it is never easy or peaceful, and can feel tempting to skip it, this is the most important part of our morning routine.

Our morning worship flow includes the following:

A chapter from a passage of scripture, alternating OT & NT, Psalms and Proverbs

Recite together a verse from our Bible Verse memory selection-currently Romans 8:31-39

Reading from a short devotional- currently using Training Hearts Teaching Minds & Leading Little Ones to God

Sing a hymn or Psalm

Reciting our term poetry memorization

Prayer requests and prayer time

Go over the plan for the day and dismiss the kids for the next block

This usually takes us 20- 30 minutes to complete. If we are having more interruptions or have a busier morning, I will just read the Bible reading for the day and pray. Sometimes I have slept in, have discipline issues to deal with a child or everyone is not getting up in time. But I have learned it is better to do less and stick to it, than throw it all out because it’s not ideal every morning.

Breakfast & Chores

8:30-9:30

When devotions are finished I dismiss the kids for their morning “dailies”. I finish getting breakfast ready, and finish my own morning chores. As the older kids finish their chores and breakfast they start right into their independent work. It is tempting to do everything myself because it’s faster and more efficient, but it is not as effective for the goals we have in parenting children. We desire to give our children real life skills and instill competency, a good work ethic, and diligence. Which means, they all have chores. This home belongs to ALL of us, and we all have a key role to play in how it runs and shapes our lives.

9:30-10:30

Next, I head downstairs to our homeschool room to check in on what the kiddos have started. After I’ve put the baby down for her nap, I begin read alouds with my Form 1 kiddos.

We focus on short lessons, so we usually only spend 15- 30 min on phonics, copywork, reading, math help, map drills and another 15-30 min. on read alouds.

Current selection of read alouds include:

Literature- The blue, Red & Pink Fairy book stories (via Librivox)

Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare (also on audio)

Afterwards they are free to play outside or quietly in the basement while I move on to Form 2 lessons.

Lunch prep & Forms 3 & 4: 8th, 10th &12th

11:30-12:30

I finish up downstairs and we do a quick tidy before heading up to prep lunch. I check in with the big kids during this block to help with math etc. They have a meeting with me in the morning and are working on their own studies during the previous hours. If they need my help they will usually come in and sit at the bar while I work in the kitchen. Sometimes I’m finishing breakfast dishes here, or just letting some lunch heat up while doing math and science help. Some days I have a chance to sneak in a quick workout or some cleaning here as well. I prioritize the most important thing in this block, and whatever else I can get done is just a bonus.

Well, that wraps up our homeschool morning routine! Now we begin moving into lunch and the afternoon finish school, housework and hopefully some rest during quiet time.

Conclusion

We all certainly have overwhelming mornings, and they aren’t bad, but they don’t have to be like that everyday, and certainly don’t have to be the norm. Believe me, our mornings are in no way idyllic. With younger ones still learning to sit quietly, and some kids not even wanting to be awake yet, we definitely have our bumps. However, if I expect every morning to look like our perfect ideal, I will never intentionally carve out a realistic way to actually accomplish what we desire. I desire a gentle start to our day centered around God’s word, NOT just my to do list. Keeping this as the focus helps me remember that those small conflicts won’t really matter in the long run if we stay faithful and keep persevering.

Having a little fun today sharing a 6 months update and photo shoot of sweet baby Olivia! This little girl has been such a gift to our family! I can’t believe she’s been with us for half a year already! There have been a lot of milestones in our family in the last 6 months, likewise many changes, but she is by far the BEST one! She is the sweetest, snuggliest, easy going of all of our babies! And likely, the cutest! I probably say that with each of mine at this stage though. Hehe. 6 months is one of my favorite stages because they are usually so happy, laughing, responsive little bundles of joy but aren’t quite getting into to everything yet.

See her home birth story on my YouTube channel here.

Small disclaimer

This is just what SHE is up to, in case you were wondering, but every baby is different and has their own developmental timelines. For example, her oldest sister was sitting up on her own at this age and trying to stand up on things. Her oldest brother was army crawling! Glad she’s taking her time! I’m not sure how she’ll ever feel the need to walk as she gets carried around everywhere by her adoring siblings.

Olivia’s 6 months milestones rundown:

Rolls over from her tummy to her back, and back again- although not as willingly, albeit not consecutively. (i.e. haven’t found her under the couch yet. HAH!)

Sits up on her own for short periods of time

Scooches backwards on her back

Eats solids: we are just having her eat a bit at dinner time once a day currently

Says “ba-ba” ‘da-da” “ma-ma” practice sounds, but not knowingly. Although her Daddy thinks so!

Holds her paccy and can turn it around the right way and takes it in and out herself

Puts her self to sleep while snuggling her bo-bo (blankie) and sucking her paccy in her own bed

Is on a regular feeding and sleeping schedule- finally!

Sleeps through the night most nights

Mobility

I have laid all of our babies on their stomachs, and they have all been solid sleepers. Because of this, I don’t really need to give my babies intentional tummy time. They have strong backs and neck muscle development from either being held upright or sleeping on their tummies a lot of the time. But Oliva, for some reason prefers her side or back. Once she started rolling over, when I lay her down she gets herself into her comfiest position on her side with her blankie snuggled up by her face. It’s so precious to watch!

I ended up splurging and buying her a little wooden jungle gym on Amazon. I had hoped to make one just like this but ended up breaking down and just purchasing one. It was exactly what I wanted so I did splurge more than I ever have, but it’s pretty much the only largish purchase we’ve made for her so far. Even her little bassinet we bought inexpensively used. I love how this little jungle gym provides a safe place for her to play and be entertained without too much stimulation. I can also fold it up and tuck it away easily, yet it looks cute while it’s out.

Just this week she began to be able to sit up on her own and balance. If she is not distracted by something she is holding, she will tip when she forgets to balance, so we only put her on soft surfaces. She balances the longest if she is holding something she is interested in.

When she is on her back playing she will also scootch backwards in kind of an inch worm movement and spin walk herself around. Thankfully, she doesn’t get too far yet- I haven’t discovered her under the couch! He he.

Eating

Currently she is on a 3 hour eat-wake-sleep schedule. Most days she is awake for 1.5 hrs and than sleeps 1-2 hrs. I let her go a bit over if she’s asleep, but I try not to feed her before that 3 hr. window. I make all of her baby food and she loves to eat! We started her on one feeding of solids a day when she was 5 months old. She gets this little meal about an hour or so after her evening nap and feeding, usually around dinner time. Either I blend some veggies from our meal or thaw some frozen fruit or veg from a previous meal I made for her. I will make another post all about how I make our babies’ food and what I start them on.

Self soothing

Although I have never been against pacifiers, and have even tried them with a few kids, none of them have ever really taken to them. Olivia, on the other hand, took a paccy readily and it was very helpful for our nursing relationship. Thankfully, I realized fairly early on that she was nursing for comfort but then getting over full and uncomfortable. I was able to give her the paccy and she could settle down, burp and fall asleep much easier. This was not the case with my other babies. She just really loves to suck! I also cracked and bled for the first time as we didn’t get her latch quite right at the beginning. She was such a vigorous sucker! Ouch! I wouldn’t wish that on anyone! Hehe

We have a little sleep routine where I will give her the paccy and blankie take her back to our room where she sleeps, rock her, read and sing to her and then either continue rocking her or lay her down. She snuggles her blankie and puts herself to sleep in her bed or is rocked to sleep in just a few minutes. Sometimes she gets squirmy when I’m rocking her and just wants to be laid in her bed and then falls asleep shortly after.

If I keep her up, however, and don’t rock her or lay her down she gets overly tired and over stimulated and has a much harder time falling asleep. So I keep her paccy and blankie in her bed and when she starts getting tired eyes, fusses or yawns I get it and start the sleep routine.

Sleep

While she has been sleeping through the night (at least a 6 hour stretch) since she was pretty tiny, it did take her awhile to find her current nap rhythm. Once I got her on a more strict time schedule with her feedings, however, she adjusted and found her natural sleeping pattern within her eating parameters.

Her 6 months sleep schedule

Currently she naps 3 -4 times a day and sleeps through the night for the most part. Some nights she’ll wake up twice, but here is what an average day might look like for her current eat-wake-sleep rhythm.

8 am Wakes up

9:30- 10:30 naps

11 feeds and plays

12 pm snuggles and does a nap routine with me

12:30- 2 naps

2 wakes, feeds and plays

4:30- snuggles and goes back down for a short nap

5:30 wakes, feeds, plays

6:30 has some solids for dinner

7:30- bath and bedtime routine

8pm- goes down for first long stretch

3-4am- wakes for a feed and is back to sleep until 7-8 am.

This does vary a bit. Sometimes she sleeps until 5, or wakes at 1 and 5. But she usually only wakes 1 or 2 times a night currently. I didn’t do any “training” to get her in this rhythm, she has just fallen into this pattern on her own. Usually I nurse her, feed her dinner, and then nurse her again before her nighttime sleep so she gets a good bumper of food. This helps her last that longer first stretch at night. I also try to avoid caffeine after 12pm.

Such an unexpected blessing

This little one was an unexpected 2020 surprise, and although it was not easy going through a pregnancy while packing, remodeling and moving, I wouldn’t have chosen it any other way, knowing this sweet girl is now a part of our family! God is so good to not leave the planning all up to us! Heheh!

Thanks for joining us on this journey, friend!
